On a scale of “Full of garbage” to “I only work on Chevy’s”, how off does this diagnosis sound:
Long story short, the LS430 has been quite the problem child, proving that service records mean nothing, and it just comes down to luck. The latest problem may be the fatal one: it was diagnosed as a spun rod bearing. Here is the thing though, nothing lines up to that diagnosis.
1. The starter was just changed, the mechanic that did it said some of the connectors looked brittle.
2. What happened: My dad left Dollar General and the VSC light flashed, then went away. About a mile later, the dash lights went wild, then it just completely died.
2. The mechanic says the piston hit a plug. That sounds more like the timing belt snapping, but still doesn’t line up with what happened. And maybe it’s different in interference engines, but from what I’ve gathered, spun bearings don’t usually mean piston munching.
4. The mechanic didn’t want to work on it.
All of this just sounds a bit off, am I wrong?
Update: The plug that was “smacked”. I’ve never seen one that wasn’t just destroyed.
Ready for an adventure!

Like a full bubble off plumb....maybe check the battery connec tions, they get dirty and computers get wacky. They need the electricals to flow easy...battery posts, grounds hookups, all of them you can see...

I’ve hit a plug with a piston when I spun a bearing.
Think about it - T he piston very nearly gets to the plug, but doesn’t. If the rod bearing goes out for lunch, the connecting rod can move up and down on that crank journal - if that extends the piston that much further towards the head, it can whack the plug but not necessarily a valve.
Or, your mechanic is full of shit

I’ll update with pics, but there are two pictures with the plug, and if it was smacked, it was more of a gentle massage. It just looks like whoever touched it last pressed the gap out.

Your mechanic doesn’t understand electricity met hinks. I bet something got shorted during starter change by not disconnecting the battery. Are there engine noises? I'm not saying your guy is wrong, but I would be shocked if he's right.

Two different mechanics. The one that did the starter did it about 1000 mile ago. They’ve generally been quite good, the spun bearing diagnosis came from an emergency “need it now” shop.

A spun rod bearing would have a characteristic noise.
Get a $2 plug to replace that one, if it fires without knocking see how far luck can take you.
Or look at the dipstick and see if it has that metallic sheen of aluminum/steel plus oil

The kicker is that it is completely dead AFAIK, which is what really raised some red flags.

Well, here’s a fun fact
Your starter is in the V valley, under the intake
Mechanic #1 had an opportunity to mess with:
Intake Manifold
Intake Manifold Gaskets
Throttle body
Intake
drop a bolt into the intake ports
forget to reconnect:
MAF sensor
Throttle DBW control
Fuel pressure regulator vacuum
Brake booster vacuum
PCV vacuum
Numerous ground wires
fail to tighten main power to starter
fail to tighten battery cables

By the picture, that plug was dropped when he pulled it out
If a piston had its way with it, all the carbon would be knocked off

And it would likely be destroyed. Dropped is my theory.

Gotcha. Emergency shop is the one I'm concerned about then. I'd go back to the first and have them look at it. Don't blame them obviously, it may not be anything they did.

My dad is just bringing it back in pieces, we will search for things from there.

Worst case, 3UZ’s aren’t uncommon, and sp inning a beari ng on one is a lottery chance.

Having just went through this on a 1uz, a spun rod bearing wont stop the engine from starting or trying to start. If the car wont crank, then try turning it over by hand, if it wont then you have a serious issue if it does then its probably something battery related.
Snapped timing belt sounds waaaaay more likely then spun bearing on an unopened motor

I agree with either the timing belt or that something went through the intake and through the engine. See if it turns over.
